Waiting..... and a name!

Waiting is something most people don't like to do. Waiting in long lines at the grocery store. Waiting for the cookies to finish cooking. Waiting for the first days of Spring. Waiting for a child to come home. The whole adoption process is a bunch of hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait, and repeat I don't know how many times. I don't mind the hurry up part, but detest the waiting part.

But it is during the waiting times that I see God really working. When I'm waiting for something, I tend to draw closer to God. Partially to ask Him to hurry up the wait. I'm human after all! But mostly to seek comfort from Him and grow in my relationship with Him during the wait.

So we wait. All our paperwork is in China now, waiting for someone over there to send us a letter stating that we are approved to adopt our son. This wait is one of the biggest unknowns of the process, how long it will be. With Olivia and Josiah's adoptions, we waited about 80 days for this approval. More recently, people have been waiting anywhere from 30 to 70 days. We are of course praying that it will come soon! After all, it is not just us waiting. There is a little boy in a crowded orphanage in China, waiting for a family to show him what love is. We are also praying that while he is waiting for his family, someone will love him there.

I think I completely forgot to announce on our blog that we have a name!!

Jayden Ailang

Jayden is named after my dad, Jay. Jayden is derived from the Hebrew name Jadon, who was a man that helped Nehemiah rebuild the wall in Jerusalem, it means thankful. And his given Chinese name is Gao Ai Lang. Every child from his orphanage has Gao as their surname. Ai is given to every child found in 2009 and Lang is his unique name.

2011 already?!!

I can't believe it has been over a month since I've made a post. Guess we've been busy! I'll update with lots of pictures what we've been up to. First of all, an update with adoption stuff. Not much to report right now. We are still waiting for our first immigration approval. They are running way behind due to the holidays and lots of applications coming in, so hopefully it will be done soon, but who knows? We did get fingerprinted while vacationing down in LA, so that was nice to get done and behind us, and didn't have to make a separate trip over the mountains to have them done in our state. As far as my guess on when we would travel?? Your guess is as good as mine. I really have no idea.

Joel and Hannah were in the Nutcracker ballet for the second year. Joel was Fritz' friend and Hannah was a soldier. They both did great!

We had a little birthday party for Jesus, cake and all! Really trying to focus on God's gift to us this year.


Then off to Disneyland! David's parents gave us a trip to Disneyland as our Christmas gift this year. We drove down over three days (extended the trip due to a snow storm coming) and got to meet up with some friends who we met in China when we were there adopting Josiah.

We got to enjoy a couple hours at Disneyland (which by the way was Olivia and Josiah's first time) and then got to take a trip to the wonderful Orange County Children's Hospital ER.

We got to meet Joanna and her family and had dinner at their house. Joanna lived in China in the same city that Josiah is from and got to spend some time with Josiah, even bringing him home for a weekend while we were waiting to get him. It was wonderful to be able to meet her and her family and boyfriend. They are great people.

The first few days at Disneyland were very wet and rainy. We tried to stay dry with ponchos, but still ended up soaked to the bone by the end of the day.

David and I went on California Screamin (a fast roller coaster ride at California Adventure) while it was pouring down rain and got SOAKED!

Olivia was very brave and went on pretty much any ride she was tall enough to do. Here she is on the swing ride that goes pretty fast and high. No fear!

Josiah also loved every ride he went on, especially the bumper cars and the Autopia cars (he's all boy!) Oh and of course he loved shooting things in the Buzz Lightyear Astroblaster ride.
It did end up getting nice for the last few days there, along with the nice weather came the huge crowds.

Hannah's favorite thing was meeting as many princesses as she could. Ariel especially spend a LOT of time with Hannah and Olivia (might have helped that Hannah was decked out in Ariel apparel and Olivia was dressed up as a princess!)

Don't worry, Joel got to meet his fill of characters too! Josiah wasn't very much into meeting the characters, they were scary for him.

Joel turned 9 at Disneyland. His whole birthday was his choice of what to do, which of course Joel loved.

Any trip to Disneyland with Uncle Mark and Aunt Carrie is extra special because of all the fun things they add, such as lots of glow sticks.

We smuggled the kids' stockings into Disneyland on Christmas morning.

Well, we started off the week with Josiah's injury, and ended it with David getting strep throat. Poor guy!

Just woke up this morning to a surprise email from Gifts to China with Love (the care package service we used - highly recommend them!) with new pictures attached of our son with his gift. Here is my favorite one - of him "meeting" us for the first time!!!

Snow fun

After weeks of getting teasers, with only dustings of snow, we finally got a real snow last week. The kids (and mom and dad) had a blast playing in the snow, making a snow fort, snow angels, a snow man, snowball fights, and sledding.

Yesterday we went on our family tradition trek to pick out a Christmas tree. We drove up to the forest near the mountains, strapped on some snow shoes, and started hiking through the woods to find the perfect tree.

We even got a pretty good Christmas picture of the kids, bonus!

Once we found our perfect tree, everyone had a turn with the saw to cut it down. Didn't take too long since the trunk on this one is super skinny!

After finally getting the tree up in the stand (not an easy task at all with a really skinny trunk) we decorated the tree and Josiah got the honors of helping to put on the tree topper since this will be his first Christmas with his forever family!

New pictures!!

We sent a care package to Ai Lang on Monday through Gifts to China with Love (http://giftstochinawithlove.com/), which is a wonderful care package service that my friend Sheri runs with the help of Katherine in China. We just sent a pretty basic care package to introduce ourselves to Ai Lang and his caretakers at the orphanage, since they probably don't know yet that he has a family waiting for him. It included a letter to the people caring for him, some pictures of our family in a cute little board book, some candy for the nannies, a disposable camera (so we can develop the pictures when we pick him up), and a panda bear stuffed animal for Ai Lang.

Then this morning, we woke up to the surprise of some new pictures and updated measurements!! We were hoping we would get some new pictures, but didn't know if we would. Some orphanages don't like giving updates and we didn't know what this orphanage would do.

Other good news: our homestudy is done! Right now, it is on it's way to our house. Then once we get it we will send it along with our I-800A application to USCIS (immigration services). Then we wait to get a letter with a fingerprinting appointment. So, we are still hoping to have all our dossier sent to China by the end of the year or early January.

Orphan Sunday

As some of you already know, today is Orphan Sunday. It's a day to encourage the church to be there for the orphans around the world, to do something, not just talk about the problem. Our church watched the video provided by Cry of the Orphan. It included testimonies from Steven Curtis Chapman and Mark Shultz, among others. It was a very moving video, and I pray that more people will be encouraged to be Jesus's hands and feet for the orphans as a result.

Our family is also trying to do more for the needy in our community. Prior to adopting Josiah, we would often go to the local community center to help make lunches for the hungry of our city. We haven't gone very much in the past months and it was great to have the chance to go again this morning. They didn't need our help for making lunches today, so we were assigned the task of sorting out donated warm clothing that people would be able to take to keep warm this winter. An about 8 year old boy came up while we were sorting out the coats and told us that he was in the rain this morning without a coat and he was so excited to see all the warm clothing. Things like that really put things in perspective. There are so many people right in our midst that just need a few minutes of our time to show them God's love.

Josiah's surgery was a little over two weeks ago. His surgery went really well. It lasted over 3 hours but he was still able to go home that same day. The recovery for this surgery has overall been a lot easier than the palate repair. He didn't have to be on a special diet and didn't have to wear the arm restraints. The main tough thing has been cleaning the stitches multiple times a day, which must hurt a lot, cause Josiah screams like we are torturing him every time we do it. His nose isn't healing as fast as the lip, and I'm a little worried about some open wounds inside his nose. His lip was really swollen the first couple days, poor guy, it just looked so painful! Now the swelling is pretty much down and his lip is looking a lot better. Should be interesting to see how the scars heal up.

Not much going on with our adoption paperwork.... our homestudy is still not finalized.... Our social worker went on a much deserved vacation for two weeks, but came back and went to work on writing up our home study. Now it is waiting in the inbox of the person at our agency who reviews the homestudy. She is supposed to be coming back to work tomorrow after a couple weeks in China. So hopefully it will be reviewed quickly and then we can go onto the next step of our preliminary application with US immigration. Our hopes of having all our paperwork sent to China by the end of the year are diminishing, but it could still happen.

Josiah's first time trick-or-treating. After about two houses, he got the idea of what was going on and really got into running from house to house to get candy! He got to the point of not wanting me to go to the door with him, and wouldn't even let me hold his hand going up and down steps, which made me a little nervous because I didn't want him to fall on his newly healing lip!

Hannah and Joel started horseback riding this week. It is through this really cool non-profit organization that gives kids the chance to learn all about horses and best of all, it is FREE!
